Murfreesboro has played an important role in the history of Tennessee, serving as the state capital from 1818 to 1826. One of the reasons for its growth is Middle Tennessee State University, which is the largest undergraduate university in the state with a total of 22,729 students as of fall 2014.
Murfreesboro’s history can be traced back to October 27, 1811, when the Tennessee General Assembly designated it as the location for a new county seat. Originally named Cannonsburgh in honor of Newton Cannon, it was later renamed Murfreesborough on November 29, 1811, after Revolutionary War hero Colonel Hardy Murfree. The name was shortened to Murfreesboro in January 1812 when the town was formally chartered.
Although it served as the state capital for eight years, it was later superseded. Today, Murfreesboro continues to grow and thrive as a major city in Middle Tennessee.
