A recent theory suggests that the Lawrenceburg area may have been the location of “Chicasa,” where Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto and his crew spent the winter of 1540-41.
In 1817, David Crockett moved from East Tennessee to the region and took on several roles, including justice of the peace, colonel of the militia, and state representative. He also established a powder mill on Shoal Creek, which was originally called the Sycamore River. Today, the area is known as David Crockett State Park. Crockett was part of the board that located Lawrenceburg four miles west of the geographic center of Lawrence County. However, he was against the city’s current location because of concerns about flooding. Crockett and his family lived in Lawrenceburg for a few years before moving to West Tennessee after a flood destroyed his mill.
After World War II, the Murray Ohio Manufacturing Company moved its manufacturing operations to Lawrenceburg, building a new factory and assembly plant. Over time, the Murray factory became one of the largest in the United States, covering 42.7 acres under roof.
In July 1998, a flood hit Lawrenceburg, resulting in the death of two people on Shoal Creek. Following this flood, the city began a 10-year flood control project that significantly reduced the risk of major flooding, which had been a problem for the town since the time of Davy Crockett.
